After the usualyears of obscurity, it seems that Reich has become even more of a media darling than Phil Glass of late and his compositions, concentrating a series of small gestures in a variety of soothing ways, now sound tailor-madefor a polite reputation. London Dominion THISWAS a sort of round-trip packageof Reich's music, from the 1972 "Clapping Music" to the new (thoughstill "minimal") "Sextet". But this is quibbling- this W& fine music, sinewy hard bop of the first water. The only reservation Ihad concerned his apparent addictionto pyrotechnics: ugly screams and irrelevantsustained hiah notes. The man himselfturned in a typically absorbing performance, muscular, dramatic and surprisingly agile. GeorgeColeman, on the other hand, appearedto be enjoying himself, as did his British rhythm section- DaveGreen impeccableas always on bass, Martin Drew brisk and sham on drums and John Critchinson subtle and imaginativeon piano. Perhapsthey'were simply havinga bad night. But the band's lack of subtlety (especiallyin the drumming, which was rock drumming and not particularlygoodrock drumming), raucousnessand (it must be said) occasional flatness did little to win over a thin Tuesday-nightaudience, most of whom clearly thought, as Idid, that the musicwas too loud. Where Paul Rutherford's music is a continuous, ferocious mumble, Christmann's is zany and impatient. His trombone sounds cracked, but sometimes it's gentle too. In tandem with Russell's dour, monochrome chording, he proffered a cartoonof mad extremes. Christmann:~world is devotedto exposing the nerve and frenzy behindthe everyday: against images of escalators and hands beingwashed, he puckered out horn lines that were as plangentlysurreal as the pictures were mundane. Sonic cd soundtrack tracklist5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Sonic Unleashed - One of the most beautiful soundtracks ever! So beautiful and nice to listen to! I love how it's all orchestral and not just rock, like how most Sonic soundtracks are. The SA2 soundtrack has always been my second favorite soundtrack. Sonic Adventure 2 - I love all the genres of music here. I love literally every song in this soundtrack. Sonic Generations - THE NOSTALGIA IS REAL! It's got so much enjoyable, awesome remixes and I love it so much. They were creating 16-bit rock songs, all of which went toward perfectly fitting the mood of the diverse zones. Nakamura is a genius, and this ost proved that while Nintendo was still churning out tired remixes of the SAME Mario overworld theme, over and over and over, the Genesis was doing something new. But seriously, such classics as Chemical Plant, Casino Night, and Metropolis? Truly made for the best Sonic soundtrack and one of the best soundtracks of all time. But unlike many people, this was the first video game I played, period, so it really holds a special place in my heart. Like many people, this was the first Sonic game I ever played. Sonic 2: Perhaps not the most expansive soundtrack, but it is still awesome. Even just the first couple of seconds of the Collision Chaos music show that! But yeah, two soundtracks for the price of one. The game seemed completely drug-induced anyway, so that style fit it and gave it some edge. I know most people prefer the latter, but I really think that the darker sound of the US soundtrack worked. CD: I'm including both the US and Japanese versions of the ost here. They need to go back to this formula for their modern titles.Ģ. Both the day and night stages had intricate, album-quality sound to it. Unleashed: this is truly the most beautiful soundtrack. And to have both Flying Battery and Ice Cap in the same game? Ahh, dat music good!ģ. Even the 2-player competition songs trump some of the music from other Sonic games. Sonic 3&K: both "parts" of the full game had awesome soundtracks, but the edge goes to 3. Why is it that the worst Sonic games have the best soundtracks?Ĥ. Don't make furry jokes) version was composed by an even younger Richard Jacques. I know the Genesis version was composed by a young Senoue, but the catchier and.sexier (talking about Rusty Ruin, you guys. 3D Blast (Saturn): yes, just the Saturn version. Double kudos for having the second best final boss theme in the series.ĥ. Kudos for having different songs for each act. It was both nostalgic and modern, something Sonic 4 just couldn't pull off. Colors: the game that got Sonic back on track-temporarily. But.some, like Sky Sanctuary and Crisis City (both Modern) were amazing.Ħ. Other songs, like Chemical Plant Modern had great potential but just were not completely fleshed out for some reason. Like how Jun Senoue said his favorite song to remix was Seaside Hill Modern, but it was basically a carbon copy of the original. Generations: here comes the hate, right? They were nice, but some of the songs were a bit lazy. Just not sure why they weren't included elsewhere in the series.Ĩ. Xtreme: it wasn't officially released but it had a HUGE ost. The remix of Angel Island Act 2 always gets me!ĩ. Pocket Adventure: surprisingly beautiful (by GBA standards) arrangements of old songs from the series. Okay, guys, we're talking about what games have the best soundtracks overall, not just which specific songs are the best. ![]()

Wimoweh tokens5/27/2023 ![]() Nobody ever thought to pay Solomon Linda songwriting royalties for the song, and most of the people who sang versions of it assumed that it was a public-domain traditional. The story of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is, of course, a story of deep music-business fuckery. Most of the people involved in putting together and selling “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” probably heard it as a weird little novelty - it started out as a B-side before radio DJs championed it - but it ended up resonating on some deeper level, and it’s been rattling around in the pop consciousness ever since. ![]() It sounds less like the doo-wop of its moment, more like a broadcast from some much older civilization - which, if you look at the song’s whole history, is basically what it is. (For a much better and longer version of the song’s story, read this great story that Rian Malan wrote for Rolling Stone in 2000.)īy the time it reached its final form, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” had gone through a few different layers of translation, and it had been thoroughly Americanized, but it remains a deeply weird song, a cascade of falsetto howls over a pulsating chant and a timpani roll. And that’s what eventually got to #1, decades after the first version of the song had been improvised in the studio. And that’s what he did, giving it near-gibberish lyrics about a lion sleeping in the jungle. But the song didn’t strike the Tokens’ producers as a pop song, so they hired songwriter George David Weiss to turn it into one. Nearly a decade later, the Tokens, group of Jewish teenagers from Brooklyn who sang doo-wop, were figuring out what to record after scoring a top-20 hit with their single “Tonight I Fell In Love.” (Neil Sedaka, who’d get to #1 in 1962 with “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” was an original Token, but he’d left the group by this time.) Tokens leader Jay Siegel knew “Wimoweh” from the Weavers record, and he wanted to record it. (It remains probably the strongest vocal I’ve ever heard from Seeger.) “Wimoweh” became a national hit in 1952, just before Seeger was blacklisted as a Communist, effectively killing the Weavers’ career. He couldn’t understand the lyrics, so he sang them phonetically when he and his band the Weavers adapted the song, giving it the new title “Wimoweh.” “Wimoweh” was a part of the Weavers’ live show for years before they recorded it, with Seeger singing the living hell out of these words that he couldn’t understand. Seeger loved the song, and he tried to sing it himself. Hope you enjoyed “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens.A vinyl copy of “Mbube” ended up in the hands of the famous folklorist Alan Lomax, who played it for his friend, the folksinger Pete Seeger. Thank you for stopping by The Daily Doo Wop. ![]() Please click here for the Daily Doo Wop YouTube channel, to which you can subscribe. After a song is featured, it then goes into the juke box. The Daily Doo Wop Rec Room has daily featured doo wop, rock and roll, R&B, or rockabilly songs that were hits during the first era of rock and roll (that is, from about 1952 until the British invasion in 1964). The lion sleeps tonight” For More Golden Oldies Music (A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh) Here are the lyrics to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens: The Tokens were also record producers of several artists, including The Chiffons, Randy & The Rainbows, The Happenings, and Tony Orlando and Dawn. Group personnel changed over the years, but for this record, the members included Jay Siegel, Hank Medress, Mitch Margo, and Phil Margo with Joe Venneri on guitar. The Tokens were from Brooklyn, NY, and originally had singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka as one of their members. ![]() Many people today know the song via Walt Disney’s The Lion King. In 1961, the version by the doo-wop group The Tokens went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #7 on the R&B Chart. There were many covers, including those by Jimmy Dorsey, The Weavers, Miriam Makeba, and The Kingston Trio. Also known as “Wimoweh” or “Wimba Way,” this song was originally recorded by South African Solomon Linda with the Evening Birds in 1939 and called “Mbube.” The lyrics were in Zulu. The golden oldie “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens, a doo wop style vocal group, has an interesting history. ![]()

Microcosm in spanish5/27/2023 ![]() When folks refer to that bill as a “Blue State Bailout,” Philly is a case in point. ![]() For non-Philadelphians who shrug their shoulders and think, “It’s not my problem,” note that $1.4 billion of your federal tax dollars was sent to Philly via the $1.9 trillion so-called COVID Relief Bill. Approximately $238 million of Philly’s $4.8 billion budget last year was used to address their debt. Like most Democrat-run cities, Philadelphia seldom comes across a problem they do not deem worthy of government intervention, which means, of course, throwing money at it. The Inevitable Results of Tax-and-Spend Democrats And while Philadelphia has long been considered a mecca for those seeking an education (as home to Temple University, Drexel University, and the Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania, among others), the city’s public school system is in rapid decline. It was the home and final resting place of Betsy Ross, the creator of our Great Flag, but many Philadelphians would apparently rather burn the flag at a Black Lives Matter protest than respect it. It’s the birthplace of our Republic, but if you’re planning a visit to Independence Hall in the near future and you value your safety, you may want to reconsider. ![]() There are dozens of cities we could examine to illustrate the failure of Democrat policies, but Philadelphia may be the most fascinating to consider. ![]() And in Portland, Mayor Ted Wheeler has stood by as riots have been ravaging the city for almost a year now, with empty hotels across the city as tourists stay away in droves. In San Francisco and Los Angeles, homelessness is out of control, their treasuries are effectively broke, and residents have been fleeing in record numbers. New York City is in rapid decay, reverting to its pre-Rudolph Giuliani condition as Mayor Bill DeBlasio is more concerned about wokeness and virtue-signaling than he is about effectively running the city’s government. Large American cities, the vast majority of which are run entirely by Democrats, are deteriorating before our eyes and the phenomenon is not due to the COVID pandemic. ![]()
